An assortment of snapshots

Trying to clear out some of the photos I’ve stockpiled for the past six months, which includes a very large stack of Hipstamatic prints. So here are a few of the most recent ones, shot in the last week.

For starters I took several photos of an old kinderpiano that my mother-in-law was selling at a yard sale this past weekend. You have to love how weathered it is, which makes me want to spend time photographing some of the other antiques that she has. In this case, the contrast between the aged toy and the leaf-strewn grass made for a few intriguing shots. Or not, you tell me.

I’m also including a few photos I took while I was driving Tuesday to speak on a panel about public relations and how they can best pitch local media. The sun setting over the Long Island Expressway set the scene for a few stylish photos, as well as a shot of the Long Island National Cemetery, which holds the remains of hundreds of deceased soldiers.

More faces, same store

Oh, what a difference a year makes … and what a difference it doesn’t.

Last year, during my annual trip to Vermont for New Year’s, I entertained myself in a Brattleboro, Vt. antique store by taking macro photos of the various statues and dolls in the shop. I was carrying a small Canon point-and-shoot, and was on my break from working as Web editor for Long Island Business News.

This year, I took the same trip, though this time a break from working as a regional editor for Patch.com. I was even dragged to the same antique store. Though this time I only had my iPhone, and this wonderful Hipstamatic app that takes vintage-style photos.

So, just like last year, I took photos of the various knick-knacks that were on sale.

All things considered, this year’s photos were better.

Enjoy.

The faces in the store

So on a recent trip to Vermont I actually found a way to entertain myself at a local antique shop. Usually, when I’m dragged to these types of shops, I wander around, staring at the ceiling, hoping my wife or family doesn’t take too long. I just don’t have the antique bug. I take nothing away from people who love antiquing, but it bores the hell out of me.

So at this recent visit I started checking out the various plastic dolls and statuettes, specifically their faces. And the more I did that the more they started to seem almost alive, with sad, happy, lost, and even demented expressions.

I decided to take as many photos of these faces as I could. I must have looked strange to the store’s staff, me some weirdo taking photos of little dolls and wooden statues, not buying anything, just snapping away.

The set came out great. And the more I look at them the more human they seem.

You tell me.

Enjoy the photos. I think I’ll take more of these.
